Things from the end of the internet

It’s kinda time when I go back to two of their albums – We Love Life and His n Hers. Both are really great and honestly these made me finally appreciate their work, since vastly overhyped and overrated Different Class (guess it’s aesthetics?).

We Love Life is sort of that feel good album. Life gets up, nature rebirths. New year comes, new cycle happens.

useless things just to fill up time

I’ve noticed how much I fill my Trello to-do board with garbage activities, which exist possibly only to take my attention from stuff I want actually do to some useless things. Maybe some are useful, like cleaning up stuff around and making things easier for me, like I feel an (pretty bad) to translate theme from here to Worpress install I wanted to get rid of made me cut really dumb idea of purging the blog and moving to static archive and I’d get a blank page again, but is it worth that time? Few hours of thinkering with CSS and some stuff around internal parts of theme is better than days and days of making static pages with lot of images and having a bad headache with redirecting all of this shit. Just I like having all of my mistakes and attempts here, all stuff I’ve written and I was proud of at that time… Nicer to keep this here, for sure.

Guess reminding about Cammy talking about having a blog for ages and having archives grow and grow made me pick better option.

Except blog stuff, I finally cleaned up old versions of my site from all of problems and broken links since .htaccess stopped working here. Everything is neatly organized into v1-v4 folders. After a year and a half, just 4 versions but I think it’s enough and I got too lazy with layouts and web design thing just got burnt out. Now thinking about that teen web design scene of very early 00s and these girls vere even on v95… Insane.

A subdomain with this stuff, also with my mixtapes and other things I dumped is up, but still need to make index pages. I have an idea but didn’t even started putting it down..

Wonderland felt like Chungking Express, hipsters’ favourite Hong Kong movie, when I just turned it on today. It’s director eadmitted inspiration by WKW’s classic but honestly for me it’s way better movie. With actual substance and story, connecting a bunch of characters (I like this a lot) and plot slowly reveals their bonds.

It’s also eye candy. Didn’t see a movie that pretty for a while. Literally everything I love and romanticize sometimes too much, the looks of busy London in late 90s and moody night shots.

If you kinda like movies like this, give it a shot. Even just for this look if you like this type of thing. Original score is great too.

While I don’t feel so afraid
Maybe this is just some kind of phase
But I don’t care about the wind in my face

‘Cause I’m not alone, these days
I’m not alone, these days
No, I’m not alone, these days, yes

Today I finally got a day off since I went on Saturday last week, so it was really nice. Pretty productive day too, since I’m still suffering and finishing works for my drawing classes. Two of them are pretty much about to be soon finished which is great, also found a while to doodle some chairs and furniture. Got an idea for some graphics for matfloor v5, still rough sketches but gonna try to finish one and try one idea first. Maybe I’ll make this into a proper illustration with most tacky 70s modernist room, maybe even place some of my lads here? Sounds incredibly fun.

Been enjoying two of mixes I did yesterday, but I got a bit tired after few listens so I switched to Massive Attack’s 1994 Essential Mix which so far is really fucking great. Need to dig through selected Essential Mixes soon, lot of good stuff and I just want to move from listening to full albums all the time, find some fun tracks and put them on my own mixes. Maybe will try entire years in the future, but amount of time needed is so huge. Would try some Breezeblock too, since turns out it got shorter sets and also good selection of artists, listened to quite of them before but wondering about mixes by some of them.

My attempts at journaling at my main site usually failed. Usually got too lazy to write new entries in my pretty, but usually annoying to edit layouts, lack of proper but simple CMS made it harder. Tried to install ancient ones like b2 or Greymatter, but both failed. Trying to install anything that old while your site runs on newest versions of everyting was kinda pointless, though taking apart these early blogging software which paved way for omnipresent WordPress was pretty fun.

While ago I thought about blogger again, since dcb tried it a while ago (though later moved to Livejournal) and decided to give it a shot again. It was my most used CMS for most of my web presence, I still remember toying with templates as kid and going to learn CSS on these RP blogs with overdesigned templates (just look at those mad photoshop skills!) and I liked it. At some point I’ve tried to play with classic templates, but after all I dumped all of this and forgot about putting my creations on web for a good while.

I had a time of dumb depression and shit like “wish I was born before” and I’ve ended browsing lot of ancient blogs, digging into history of Blogger and DiaryLand, collecting some of them with truly fun layouts that were embodient of most hip web design trends for cool people. Even stumbling on some vintage blogger installs made me discover that in fact pages generated by it always were just XHTML with some specific bits needed to make it work.

So recently I started to convert my old static journal themes to blogger and discovered some things (which are perfect material for longer blog post) but in the end I created an entirely new theme. Which unblocked me and web design stuff just came back to me after a long break, it truly feels good.

After this little ramble I hope to dump random links and stuff, maybe even single random photos that don’t deserve being on a photo a day, just talk about some noteable events (rare) in my life. But it feels good to be back.
